This Professional Learning Plan outlines what I have learnt in this course, what I still need to learn and how I will achieve these goals. This will be added to over the course of this degree.

What I have experienced and learnt

  • Observed cataloguing books using Oliver: z-cataloguing system

  • Add barcodes/use ISBN to catalogue, duplicate books and add copies of books

  • How to classify books – deciding which section to place book.

  • Run overdue records

  • Search using OPAC, teach children/staff to search using OPAC

  • Use circulation desk to loan and return books

  • Shelve books – understand Dewey system/sections in library.

  • Tidy library

  • Make visually appealing displays, new book displays.

  • Make shelf markers

  • Cover and stamp new books

  • Organise furniture

  • Observed TL ordering books online, talking/emailing booksellers

  • Process for ordering – barcoding, stamping, spine labels, covering.

  • Copying invoices for secretary/Checking orders

  • Planning excursion to Riverbend books

  • Participate in borrowing lessons (loan and return system) – encourage students to borrow books at their reading level.

  • Observed TL conduct skills lessons – dewey decimals/responding to literature/introduce read-a-thon for National Year of Reading.


What I still need to learn

  • Catalogue books manually using the system.

  • Catalogue other resource types, eg: posters, dvd’s etc.

  • Continue to learn Oliver system – how to do exchanges, change book status, add and remove borrowers, weeding

  • Weeding process – how to make decisions

  • How to conduct a stocktake/Participate in stocktake.

  • Contact booksellers myself

  • Print spine labels

  • Understanding/knowing books to order. (Are they appropriate for the school?)

  • How to develop collection management policy.

  • Planning process, participate in planning session with teachers

  • Resource teachers – bulk loans/readers/unit materials.

  • Manage the budget

  • How to conduct information literacy skill lesson

  • How to conduct inquiry project/lesson

  • Go other school libraries to gain experience/make comparisons


How I will achieve these goals

  • Oliver training - Reading manual, viewing instructional CD’s, attend Oliver training sessions

  • Discuss possible involvement in planning sessions and stocktake with Principal and TL

  • Talk to mentor TL and learn as much from her as possible.

  • Attend TL network meetings

  • Join professional networks, associations, request newsletters/blog posts online eg: ASLA,

  • Ask advice on OZTLnet

  • Participate in collaboration/construction of policy documents.

  • Read professional literature
