Welcome to Katherine Terwin's Professional Portfolio
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."
— Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"
My name is Katherine Terwin. I am 29yrs old and currently studying my Masters in Education (Teacher Librarianship). I have aspired to become a Teacher Librarian since beginning my teaching career. After having two children, I wanted to return to study and gain experience in this field. When the opportunity came up to complete my Teacher Librainship through a Catholic Education Scholarship I was thrilled to be accepted and begin my journey at the Queensland University of Technology. Having no previous experience working as a Teacher Librarian (TL), this course will prepare me for the exciting and challenging aspects of the TL role.
This portfolio will demonstrate my learning over the course of this degree and beyond. I will relate my experiences and reflections to the ALIA & ASLA Standards of professional excellence for teacher librarians that outline standards for best practice in teacher librarianship. The Standards "describe the professional knowledge, skills and commitment demonstrated by teacher librarians working at a level of excellence. It represents the goals to which all Australian teacher librarians should aspire, and provides inspiration for quality teaching and ongoing professional practice" (ALIA & ASLA, 2004). I will use these standards to guide my professional practice as a TL in the 21st century. They are organised under three main headings in which I have dedicated each a page on this site. Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Commitment.
This portfolio includes observations and critique of a variety of library sites, my personal reflections and use of professional literature to support statements and review professional practice. This portfolio also includes a Professional Learning Plan which outlines my current and future learning goals.
